utopia (n.)
A utopia is an imagined society in which everything has been got right. Thomas More made the word up in 1516, as the name of the island in his book.12
He built it from the Greek ou, not, and topos, place: no place. The joke is that it is a syllable away from eu-topos, good place, and More points at it himself — an addendum to the book has a verse saying the island ought rightly to be called Eutopia, the place of happiness.12
Both readings sit in the word at once, and the book does not choose between them.1
Their plan was a utopia and everybody knew it.
