A school is a place people are taught in. The word came through the Latin schola from the Greek skholē, which meant spare time, leisure, rest.12
The connection is less odd than it looks. Free time was what you needed in order to sit and argue about something, so the word moved from the time to the discussion held in it, and then to the people holding the discussion and the place they held it in.12
Latin kept some of that width. Schola could mean leisure for learning, a lecture, a debate, or a place of learning.12
English took the narrowest of those senses: a building, a register and a timetable.1
She teaches at a school in the city.
