Words with Stories

consider (v.)

To consider something is to think about it carefully.

The word comes through Old French from Latin considerare, to observe attentively or contemplate.12

A long-standing explanation connects the Latin verb with sidus, meaning a star, heavenly body, or constellation. On that reading, considerare may once have meant something like observing the stars closely, perhaps for navigation or divination.12

The connection is probable rather than certain. Other explanations for the Latin verb have been proposed, so the star story is best kept as a strong possibility rather than a literal definition.2

English kept the idea of close attention even after the stars disappeared from ordinary use.

I need some time to consider the offer.
