Climate now means the usual weather conditions of a place over a long time. The word began with an angle.13
The Greek klima meant an inclination. Ancient geographers divided the earth into zones by latitude and the angle of the sun’s rays. Places at similar latitudes received the noon sun at a similar angle, and were placed in the same zone.12
Weather came to define the word more fully. Rain, wind, altitude, and local geography also matter to a place’s climate.2
The island has a mild climate.
