boycott (v.)
To boycott something is to refuse to buy, use, or take part in it as a form of protest.
The word comes from Charles Boycott, an English land agent in County Mayo, Ireland. In 1880, during a dispute over rents and evictions, local people and members of the Irish Land League isolated him. Workers left, businesses refused to deal with him, and his name became attached to the tactic.12
The name spread quickly from one dispute to a general word for organized refusal.12
They agreed to boycott the company.
