A bank is an institution that holds money. The word comes from the Italian banca, a bench, which was also used for the bench-like counter a money-changer worked at, and then for the shop itself.12
The trade travelled from Italy to France and England and the word went with it. The marble hall and the application on a phone both started as a table in a market.2
